Cha-cha is a Cuban dance, originating from Mambo and it reached its highest popularity in the mid-1950s. The main difference between Mambo and Cha-cha is that instead of one step followed by two strokes, which is a characteristic of Mambo, three steps are followed by those two strokes. The rhythm was developed on the basis of the Danson sound – by the syncopation of the fourth beat. Cha-cha can be danced with authentic Cuban music in the background, Latin pop or Latin rock. While the standard style is more energetic, fast and with a constant rhythm, the original Cuban dance is slower, more sensual and with complex transitions in the rhythm.
